What happens in SAT prep class?
In the class, we work on skills to help students use what
they have learned in the classroom to maximize their scores. For the
Reading portion of the class, we develop strategies to identify the key
words embedded in reading passages that lead to the correct answers. Specific strategies designed for each type of reading passage and question are developed to help improve scores. We also work on developing vocabulary and learn how to recall seemingly difficult words by identifying roots and prefixes.
In the Math section, we review the most commonly
tested items, SAT math terminology, and the most prevalent
tricks of the SAT test writers. We specifically address all four area of the Redesigned math test: Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving/Data Analysis, Passport to Advanced Math, and Additional Math Topics. We work on strategies to simplify seemingly hard abstract math questions that keep some students from reaching their potential.
We identify the specific question types in the Writing
section and learn to find the most common corrections that appear on
the test. We also review the most common grammar, usage, and mechanics tested on the SAT.
After we develop strategies for each section, we take
practice tests from the Official SAT Study Guide: 8 Real SATs with only real SAT practice. (Picture of book below) This gives the students the opportunity to implement the strategies and develop the pacing and confidence to improve their scores.
ACT Connections We discuss the structural and scoring differences of the ACT and SAT, and develop ways to apply the strategies to the ACT. We do some ACT practice, but the focus of the class is SAT. Many of my past students felt that the SAT prep helped improve their ACT scores because the SAT seemed a little more difficult to them. In fact, the structure of the Redesigned SAT is very similar to the ACT.
Private (individual or 2/3 students) tutoring is available; please contact me for details. 956.533.3774
Redesigned SAT We thoroughly address the changes on the redesigned SAT that debuted on March 5th 2016. Many of the strategies will stay the same because both tests, former and redesigned, measure math and verbal fluency. Rest assured, we will prepare for the structural changes and additional question types. I have attached a current SAT vs. SAT redesigned comparison chart below the SAT schedule.
I have been an English teacher at McAllen Memorial High School
