What happens in the new Digital SAT prep class?
In the class, we work on skills to help students use what
they have learned in the classroom to maximize their scores. We first use the book to develop skills and then practice those strategies in the digital SAT tests provided by the College Board's Bluebook app. This gives the students a chance to use the online tools. (Most students are familiar with the online tools because the EOC tests use similar online tools as the SAT.
For the Reading and Writing portion of the class, we develop specific strategies designed for the new digital SAT reading and writing passages. These strategies help students to identify the keywords embedded in reading passages that lead to the correct answers. We also work on developing vocabulary and learning how to recall seemingly difficult words by identifying roots and prefixes.
In the Math section, we review the most commonly
tested items, SAT math terminology, and the most prevalent
tricks of the SAT test writers. We specifically address all four areas of the SAT Digital math test: Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving/Data Analysis, Passport to Advanced Math, and Additional Math Topics. We work on strategies to simplify seemingly hard abstract math questions that keep some students from reaching their potential.
We identify the specific question types in the Writing
section and learn to find the most common corrections that appear on
the test. We also review the most common grammar, usage, and mechanics tested on the SAT.
After we develop strategies for each section, we take
practice tests from The Digital SAT Study Guide: with only real SAT practice. (Picture of book above.) This allows the students to implement the strategies and develop the pacing and confidence to improve their scores.
ACT Connections We discuss the structural and scoring differences of the ACT and SAT, and develop ways to apply the strategies to the ACT. We do some ACT practice, but the focus of the class is the SAT. Many of my past students felt that the SAT prep helped improve their ACT scores because the SAT seemed a little more difficult to them. In fact, the ACT is now offering a digital option.
Private (individual or 2/3 students) tutoring is available; please contact me for details. 956.533.3774
